Causes

In this medical condition, a harmless lump or cyst-like swelling that develops mostly on the palate (roof) of mouth.Following are some reasons that can be behind such condition:

  • Blocked salivary glands are one among some other causes.. Normally, saliva drains from the glands to the mouth, but when the ducts are obstructed, saliva gets stuck inside. Such accumulation creates a bump which is soft and somewhat pearly or bluish in color, and painless.

  • Every person who suffer from torus palatinus will usually have a growth that has a diameter of two centimeters. It can also be bigger because it tends to grow slowly.This growth can be broad and flat or knob-shaped and usually feels smooth.
  • The growths are usually not painful but the bigger growths, obviously cause irritation in your mouth. These growth are made of bone and are covered by pink, non-resilient, and firm tissue of your palate.
    Patients feel difficult while drinking and eating.
  • If you are using dentures, then it could also interfere with the placement of dentures causing an infection that could spread to the palate or bone itself. Ultimately you will experience ulcerations and pain.

Besides the fact that it is not a life-threatening medical condition but it’s better to get medical attention as early as possible. If the torus palatinus is not very large and does not cause any problems with drinking or eating it is best to leave it alone and not have it surgically removed. But if it cause irritation then you should consult your doctor.

Removal Treatment

Surgery is the only treatment to remove a certain amount of bone in your palate. Your prognosis is usually excellent after having the surgery. No major complications are reported after having surgery.
